TO KEEP IN MIND

The peculiarity of scleral lenses is the combination of the large diameter of the lens and the rigid material. The large diameter is the main factor for the increased comfort because it allows the lens to land exclusively on the conjunctival tissue (a less sensible tissue compared with the cornea) and to reduce the interaction between the lens edge and the eye lids. The rigid material of the lens does not allow the lens to conform with the ocular surface, thus, between the lens and the cornea a liquid reservoir is created that acts as a lens correcting about 90% of the regular and irregular anterior corneal astigmatism. The liquid reservoir also moistens the underlying ocular surface during all the lens wearing time. Along with this, scleral lenses are indicated in irregular corneas and in several ocular surface diseases.

Keep in mind:

  • The lenses are made of a rigid material that lets oxygen pass through the lens.
  • The scleral lens provides excellent comfort due to the lack of contact with a cornea, the large diameter and small movement on the eye.
  • The lens is also indicated for normal corneas such as patients with presbyopia who need multifocal/bifocal corrections and those with high myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
